The organisers of the Royal National Mod, which this year takes place in the Western Isles from 14th to 22nd October have this week announced that the Mod 2005 Piping competitions will take place in Benbecula.
Competitions will take place in Liniclate School on Saturday 15th October with a Ceilidh in the Dark Island Hotel on the evening of Saturday 15th October. Entries to Mod 2005 close on 31st May.
John A MacIver, Convener of the Royal National Mod said “We are delighted to be able to take the Piping competitions at the Mod back to Benbecula this year. In 2001, the competitions were held in Benbecula and were very successful. Piping also has great support in that part of the Western Isles. This decision also confirms our intention that Mod 2005 will be a Western Isles Mod”
Stephen Peteranna, Managing Director of the Isles Hotel Group also welcomed the decision saying “Uist and Benbecula have very strong links with the piping world and we are delighted to be able to welcome the Mod here once again this year”
Mod organisers are hopeful that other events will take place in other areas of the Western Isles during Mod week however Mr MacIver was unable to confirm any details at this stage. He added “We are looking at various possibilities and will advise people as soon as possible once any decisions have been made”.
Mod 2005 will open on Friday 14th October and will close on the morning of Saturday 22nd October. Support for Mod 2005 has come from a wide number of organisations including Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Western Isles Enterprise. Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd are once again the main commercial supporter of the Mod while the Royal Mail Group and Islay Mist Whisky are also providing strong support.
