As the 102nd Royal National Mod approaches, the organisers have today (Tuesday 20 September) published the Official Programme for the event which takes place in the Western Isles from Friday 14th October to Saturday 22nd October.

The organisers have expressed their satisfaction at the number of entries for Mod 2005 which will see over 2000 competitors taking part in 183 competitions around 22 venues in Benbecula and Lewis.

Among the competitors will be groups and individuals from the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia with the UK also well represented. London Gaelic Choir, Dingwall Gaelic Choir and Inverness Gaelic Choir are amongst the 29 Senior Gaelic choirs taking part. Junior choir entries are also healthy with 23 choirs set to attend. The number of individual competition entries to Mod 2005 shows an increase from the last Mod held in the Western Isles with over 1900 entries for 2005 compared to 1726 in 2001.

Mod 2005 will open with a Shinty tournament at Liniclate School, Benbecula on Friday 14th October starting at 1130am. Other events in Uist include a Church Service, Mod Piping and Drama competitions.

John A Maciver, Convener of the Royal National Mod said; “We are delighted with the numbers and we are looking forward to an enjoyable Mod. The local committee and the Mod Company with the support of key partners such as Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Enterprise, Visit Scotland and Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd as our main commercial supporters have been working very hard in the planning of the event.”

Main venues for Mod 2005 include the new An Lanntair Arts Centre which will be the venue for the Official Opening on Friday 14th October and also the new Lewis Sports Centre.
